History: Kain Highwind grew up in Baron, and spent much of his youth excelling in his studies and training. An only child, Kain always looked up to his father in particular, hoping to one day be a strong warrior like him. It was his father who first began training him and teaching him in his fighting style. The family had been all been dragoons for many generations, and Kain wanted nothing more than to follow in that legacy.

Since he was not very outgoing, Kain never developed many close friendships as a child, always staying at the fringe of social groups. It was during his later years in school at Baron that everything changed dramatically. First, he became acquainted with Edge and Cecil, with whom he formed something bordering on friendship.

This was not destined to last, however. Trouble came to the Highwind home. Kain's father died, leaving the young man distraught. It was then that Kain started to drift from his old friends and spend time with a very different crowd. He became involved in a gang, under a devious leader, Golbez. These new, rebellious "friends" were a bad influence on Kain. Golbez especially manipulated him during this time, tempting his darker side to the surface. For a while, this dulled the pain of his loss, but it only ended up giving him worse problems than before.

After getting caught a few too many times in troublesome situations, Kain realized that the lifestyle wasn't for him. One incident in particular made him realize just how dishonorable his actions were. Wanting to redeem himself, Kain cut ties to the gang, deciding to follow in his late father's footsteps by attending university. It was there where he hoped to make a new start.

So far, the first semesters of college have pulled him in both positive and negative directions. Although he struggles to keep his sense of honor, Kain frequently finds himself tempted to act out in anger. He has been in several fights already, and will not back down when he feels himself challenged. The arrival of Golbez only caused his shell to harden further. He views Golbez as a threat and someone who has taken away his role as Cecil's brother. An ill-played prank nearly destroyed the friendship completely. Since then, he transferred schools once to again attempt "starting over."

The transfer seemingly worked out at first. But Kain's stubborn attitude has led him to a few more fights against Harken (and Golbez). It has become his personal quest to outdo Harken, even if the consequences are often disastrous. He has also had to fight Golbez out of his mind again, and swore to keep him away. However, Golbez's break into his mind during the summer before his junior year shattered that defense. Now he's determined just to get by and avoid turning on his friends if he can. He has attacked Cecilia three times (twice because of Golbez, once because of a campus-wide brainwashing incident). He will do anything not to let it happen again and swears to protect her from harm. Being attacked and nearly killed by a mentally confused Cecil also really shook him... he now understands what it's like to have a friend turn on him, the opposite experience of what he's used to.

As a result of his mind being messed up, his evil side comes to the surface occasionally- he also has frequent (and disturbing) dreams of a sexual nature, involving Harken. He has found ways to at least somewhat fight those off (thanks to Tiamat and a dreamcatcher), and staying with Cecilia makes them completely vanish. In fact, he got to really like being around Cecilia, and during a fever dream his real feelings for her manifested. After a New Years' Eve kiss and confession (and a bit of jabbing from Yuri), Kain has finally gotten the courage to ask her out.

Having a girlfriend has been a new experience for Kain, who has learned what it means to care about someone that strongly. When he took a trip to be alone in the mountains, his enemies closed in and kidnapped Cecilia, causing Kain to fall into a deep depression, having had his mind messed with to believe he was responsible... which he was snapped out of by Yuri. He went on to battle the four fiends and rescue Cecilia, vowing never to leave her again. When Rosa- another friend from the past- showed up, Kain felt some of his old feelings resurfacing. This caused him to briefly turn willingly to evil, asking Golbez to take him under control. While evil, Kain backstabbed both Rosa and Cecilia, actions he still deeply regrets. He decided that he'd have to let go of any lingering feelings for Rosa in order to focus on Cecilia. A possession by cursed paintings caught Cecilia later that summer, which made her act very unlike herself, to Kain's dismay. He easily forgave her, understanding what she was going through. Since then, they had a few disagreements, mainly regarding Kain's tendency to get into fights. This made her force Kain back to his own room, where a series of new, disturbing nightmares began haunting him. He is now struggling to keep his mind clear and calm, for her sake more than anything.

Now at Poseidon, Kain has no idea what to expect. Perhaps in a new environment he will have a chance at redeeming himself once and for all. He will work on staying sane... if he can.

Personality: A very aloof, serious-minded individual, Kain appears to have no need for close connections to others. He comes off as confident in most interactions, even rather arrogant at times. Still, he is very loyal to those he considers friends, and somehow manages to put up with their antics. He is intense, passionate, and strong-willed beneath the coldness and apathy, even if few people see beyond this front. Honor is everything to him.

Yet he also has a much darker side; a tendency to never forgive faults, in others and himself. Jealousy is his greatest weakness, and he will always take revenge when he feels it necessary. Trying to outdo others- and live up to what he views as his father's standard's- often drives him to go too far. He is capable of a very scathing sarcasm, and often isn't very pleasant to talk to.

Kain is determined to live life on his own terms, and will not tolerate being influenced by Golbez again. Unfortunately, his mind's low defense leaves him still open to attacks from the other, much to his vast annoyance.

Appearance/physical attributes: Kain is relatively tall and in decent shape, considering his self-discipline in physical and mental routines. He typically keeps his long blonde hair pulled back. His clothes are generally non-descript and casual: nothing that really sets him apart from the crowd. He wears a lot of blue, and prefers function over style. Most of the time, he has a neutral expression on his face, as if the entire world bores him.

He's always had an interest in sparring and combat, and often pushes himself to the limit when training. Sometimes, he attempts to go beyond that limit, which leads to disastrous results. Combat with spears or lances is his strong suit; he has very basic knowledge of some other weapons from classes. He does his best fighting when he can jump off the ground; his strength is in the air. His specialized Jump ability allows him to leap to great heights for an attack. If no weapons are around, he can hold his own in unarmed combat. However, he is very weak against magic attacks, and has no talent in this area- he's especially susceptible to mind control and possession. He also does best in wide open environments as opposed to enclosed spaces.
